Laurie was honoured before the LaLiga matchday 12 fixtures between Rayo Vallecano and Real Madrid, played at the Estadio de Vallecas. The legendary English striker, who died on 15 July 1989 in a traffic accident, played for Real Madrid from 1979 to 1982 (winning one league title and two Spanish Cups) and for Rayo Vallecano in the 1986-87 and 1988-89 seasons. Real Madrid's honorary president José Martínez Pirri, and the Rayo Vallecano president Raúl Martín Presa, presented Cunningham's wife and son with a personalised jersey from each team bearing the number 11.
