Kylian Mbappé was named MVP of the match between Real Madrid and Olympique Marseille, on matchday one of the Champions League. The striker was the standout performer of the game, netting both goals that secured victory for Madrid and bringing his tally to 50 as a Madridista: “It's a pleasure to be here and experience another Champions League night. It was a bit of a tough night because we went down to 10 men for a while, but we brought that Champions League spirit to the Bernabéu. It's always like that at the Bernabéu, whatever happens. We always expect to win. Today we won and we're very pleased.”
“I 'm feeling really good. I don't think too much about being the leader, I just think about being myself. I want to help my teammates and the team. These things come naturally, you can't ask for them. I feel good in the team. There are lots of players younger than me and I hope I can help them do their best. I want us to move forward together in the same direction to win trophies”
Did Xabi Alonso ask for intensity?
“He wants us to win the ball back quickly. We have to understand what we're doing and, once we grasp that, we have the determination to do it because we want to win. We communicate well so we know what we have to do, and we do it for this badge.”
“I always do what the coach wants. Today he asked me to press forward to help because we have a high block to recover a lot of balls. We're going to get more used to doing that, it'll become easier and it'll help the team win trophies.”
The handball for the penalty
“The issue of handball is very complicated. Sometimes they say they'll give them all and then they don't. It's difficult to find any logic in it. We follow the rule and if it's a penalty, it's a penalty. For me, it is, but I can understand why some people say it isn't; everyone is confused by that rule. Either it's handball or it isn't. But if a penalty is awarded, I'll take it and score, that's all there is to it.”
How many goals is he aiming to score?
“As many as possible. I don't set limits for myself. I just want to help the team: if that means scoring, then scoring; if it means pressing, then pressing; or if it means assisting, then assisting. I want to do whatever the team needs me to do.”
