Real Madrid lost a Clásico in which they took the lead after just five minutes. Mbappé took advantage of Cubarsí's mistake in delivering a back pass to Szczęsny to get to the ball before the keeper, who brought him down inside the area. The Frenchman converted the penalty to make it 0-1. Nine minutes later, after a recovery in their own half, the Whites launched a lightning counter-attack in which Vini Jr. provided a masterful assist with the outside of his right foot and Mbappé finished the one-on-one against Szczęsny. It was the Frenchman's 26th LaLiga goal of the season, surpassing Zamorano as the player with the most goals in their first season as a Real Madrid player (38).

Real Madrid had taken a 2-0 lead with less than a quarter of an hour gone, but Barcelona cut the deficit after 20 minutes from a corner which Ferrán flicked on at the near post and Eric headed home. After the half-hour mark, Lamine Yamal brought things level with a shot from the edge of the area from a move that started with De Jong controlling the ball with his hand and in the 34th minute, Raphinha put the home side ahead with a finish across the keeper. Before the break, Hernández Hernández awarded a penalty for a challenge between De Jong and Mbappé inside the box, but it was overturned by the VAR for a borderline offside call on Bellingham. And in the very next play, Raphinha made it 4-2, which brought the first half to a close.
Mbappé hat-trick
The frenetic pace of the first half did not abate in the second half, and in the 55th minute, Mbappé produced a brilliant piece of skill inside the area to create a shooting opportunity for himself, but his effort missed the target by a matter of inches. The game was a constant back-and-forth and in the 70th minute, Mbappé completed his hat-trick. Modrić found a gap in the home defence, which Vini Jr. took advantage of to get in front of Szczęsny and feed the Frenchman, who was left with an easy finish. The minutes ticked by and in the 85th minute Vini Jr. looked for an equaliser with a shot from the edge of the area that ended up in the goalkeeper's hands. A clearer chance came for debutant Víctor Muñoz in the 89th minute, but he failed to find the target in a one-on-one with Szczęsny.
Mbappé also had a chance to equalise in stoppage time in another one-on-one, this time from a deeper angle, but the Barcelona keeper turned the ball behind for a corner. Modrić headed it out and Tchouameni scored, but the goal was disallowed for offside by Mbappé. Fermín had a goal in the last play, but it was disallowed after the referee consulted the referee on the monitor for a handball by the midfielder.
