64th anniversary of club's first Intercontinental Cup

1 month(s)

On 4 September 1960, Real Madrid celebrated their first Intercontinental Cup triumph against Peñarol de Montevideo. The Whites beat the winners of the Copa Libertadores in that first edition in a two-legged tie. The first leg was played in Uruguay and ended 0-0.

The second leg was played at the Bernabéu, and Real Madrid ran out 5-1 winners in front of their home fans. Miguel Muñoz ‘s men got off to a flying start and struck three goals in the first ten minutes. Two goals from Puskas and another from Di Stéfano, whose deflected shot went in off a Hungarian defender, were the first scorers. Herrera and Gento rounded off the scoring.

8 times world champions
64 years later, Real Madrid have won more world championship titles than any other team. In total they have collected eight, the first three of which were won in the Intercontinental Cup format.
