1-0: Real Madrid off to winning start in Youth League

4 week(s)

Real Madrid made the perfect start to the UEFA Youth League with a thoroughly deserved victory over Stuttgart at Real Madrid CityArbeloa’s side were the better team from start to finish and they were rewarded for their dominance with Yáñez’s fine goal on the half-hour mark.
The forward cut inside and fired a left-footed strike in off Hellstern's right-hand post - the keeper was the visitors' best player. It was the only goal in a match where the Whites deserved more goals based on their performance and the number of chances created.

Arbeloa’s boys were dominant from the get-go and began to carve out chances. The first fell to full-back Liberto, whose shot inside the box on eight minutes forced Hellstern into a smart save. Fortea then got away from his marker on the right wing with a neat stepover and his cross found Yáñez, who beat the Stuttgart defence to the ball but his effort came back off the post.

Yáñez wondergoal
The forward was in the thick of the action and in the 27th minute Hellstern was on hand to deny his powerful drive at the end of a superb piece of skill. Yáñez had threatened twice before and it was third time lucky the Madridista. In the 32nd minute, he controlled the ball at the edge of the area, cut inside and unleashed a fierce shot that gave the visiting keeper no chance. The Madrid academy side almost doubled their lead on 33' when Joan Mascaró popped up at the far post, but the goalkeeper reacted with a fine save to keep the ball out.

The tempo dropped after the interval, but the chances kept coming. Aimar tried his luck in the 63rd minute with a thunderous shot from the edge of the area, only for Hellstern to produce a superb save. Three minutes later, Valdepeñas’ header from Diego Aguado’s cross sailed over, and on 81’ another header, this time from Pol Fortuny from Miguel’s centre, grazed the post of the Germans' goal. Arbeloa's side, who were rock solid and comfortable throughout, earned three well-deserved points in their Youth League opener.
