Real Madrid qualify for the Women's Champions League
2 week(s)
Real Madrid qualified for the first round of the Women's Champions League for the fifth consecutive season. They did so after a qualifying play-off against Eintracht Frankfurt, whom they beat in both matches. In the second leg, played at the Alfredo Di Stéfano, Feller ('9) and Bruun ('35) scored in the first half, and Linda Caicedo, who had a great performance and played a part in all three goals, made it 3-0 in the second period. This Friday, Pau Quesada's side will find out who their opponents will be in the league phase after the draw in Nyon at 12:00 pm (CEST).
Madrid got off to a good start, alternating possession with good pressure on Eintracht's defence. The first dangerous chance fell to the Germans, but Frohms blocked the low shot to avoid the goal. And from a possible 0-1, it was 1-0. The Whites took the lead immediately afterwards through Feller, who came from behind to finish off Altenburg's clearance from Linda Caicedo's initial shot.
After half an hour, the Colombian was again the protagonist in the second goal with a great individual move. She started the counter-attack from her own half, surged past several opponents, and put in a cross into the box for Bruun to extend the lead. Caicedo could have made it three with a powerful long-range effort in stoppage time, but the keeper deflected it onto the crossbar. Shortly before, Frohms kept Senss' shot out of the top corner with a great save.
Caicedo caps a fine game
The Whites continued to dominate after the break, and in the 60th minute, it was all over. A great team move ended with a nice back-heel touch from Shei, leaving Linda Caicedo well placed to finish. The Colombian controlled and fired in a cross-shot to make it 3-0 and put the icing on the cake of her great night at the Di Stéfano. Las madridistas kept control of the game until the end and confirmed their presence among the 18 teams that will be in the draw for the Women's Champions League.
