It is 33 years since the death of one of Real Madrid‘s great legends: Juan Gómez, ’Juanito'. On 2 April 1992, the former Madrid player lost his life in a traffic accident on his way back to Mérida after watching a match against Torino at the Santiago Bernabéu. At the time, he was 37 years old and head coach at Mérida.
was born on 10 November 1954 in Fuengirola (Málaga) and made history at Real Madrid from 1977 to 1987. He played 401 official matches for our club, scored 121 goals, and won 2 UEFA Cups, 5 LaLiga titles, 2 Copa del Rey trophies, 1 League Cup, and 1 Pichichi Trophy.
His memory
Since that fateful moment, Madrid fans remember him in the seventh minute of every game at the Santiago Bernabéu by chanting ‘Illa, illa, illa, Juanito maravilla’.
