Women’s Champions League campaign comes to an end
3 week(s)
Real Madrid were beaten by Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, meaning they won’t be present in the Women’s Champions League semi-finals. Our team were unable to capitalise on their 2-0 first-leg advantage, conceding three second-half goals that knocked them out of the European competition. The first half started promisingly and the madridistas defended resolutely up against an Arsenal side looking to turn the tie around in front of the home fans.
The hosts imposed a blistering pace on the game, and our girls stood up to the onslaught admirably. They conceded only one real goalscoring chance in the opening period, a Mariona header that flew inches over from a corner on 11 minutes. Madrid came close with 40 on the clock, but Angeldahl's effort following a swift counter was well kept out by Van Domselaar.
It was 0-0 when the half-time whistle went, but the second half couldn't have got off to a worse start. Russo made it 1-0 on 46’, before Mariona levelled the tie with a header three minutes later. Russo netted again on 58’ to put Arsenal ahead on aggregate, so Real Madrid had to score to take the game to extra-time. They nearly found what they were looking for when Linda C. got a shot off in the area in injury time, but Van Domselaar was equal to her effort.
