Real Madrid fall to home defeat against Chelsea
6 day(s)
Real Madrid deserved more at the Alfredo Di Stéfano, putting on an impressive display against Chelsea in the final Women’s Champions League Group Stage clash, but fell just short of the win their efforts merited. Weir opened the scoring in the first half, but two penalties converted by Macario inside five minutes after the break took the game away from the madridistas, who enjoyed several chances to score more. The result means Toril's team make the quarter-finals as Group B runners-up. They will discover their opponent in the next round at the draw set for 7 February in Nyon.
Our team could not have hoped for a better start. Following Weir's effort being gathered by Hampton in the opening minute, the Scottish ace made no mistake with 7 on the clock. Linda Caicedo picked up an Olga pass in the box and pulled it back to Weir, who blasted in past the visiting goalkeeper. It was a frenetic affair early on, and with 13 minutes played, the opposition responded through Reiten, but Misa did well to send her effort behind for a corner. Olga could have extended our lead with 26 on the clock, getting a shot off from inside the box which skimmed just the wrong side of the post. On the stroke of half-time, Misa then ensured Chelsea didn't equalise before the break, with a sublime save to keep out Charles' drive from the edge of the area
Luck deserts Real Madrid
As the teams came out for the second half, the English outfit pushed forward in search of a leveller. They found it with 51 minutes gone, after Olga gave a penalty on Macario, who stepped up to make it 1-1. Luck was not kind to our team, and just five minutes later, Olga touched the ball with her hand inside the area and Macario made no mistake from 12 yards for the second time. Madrid looked to hit back through long-shots by Weir and Angeldahl but neither could find the target.
The Swedish ace continued to look for a response, enjoying two quickfire opportunities - first her cross-shot from a free-kick came back off the bar, before she turned Feller's pass towards goal but slid it just wide of the upright (67’). Feller herself could have equalised following a superb pass by Weir that left her one-on-one with Hampton, but her effort went over the crossbar. Despite the numerous chances, the game ended in defeat at the Di Stéfano.
