Madrid Under-19s knocked out of Youth League

4 day(s)

The Real Madrid under-19s missed out on a place in the quarter-finals of the UEFA Youth League after losing to AZ Alkmaar at the Alfredo Di Stéfano stadium. The academy side, who deserved much more and created numerous chances, were denied by the effectiveness of their opponents and the excellent performance of their goalkeeper. A goal by Bouziane in the 29th minute and another by Van der Klaauw in the 87th minute earned the Dutch side a place in the next round.

The under-19s dominated from the start and had decent chances to take the lead. In the 9th minute, Cestero's right-footed shot from the edge of the area narrowly missed the target. Ten minutes later, Jacobo volleyed wide. In the next attack, the opposition goalkeeper saved a low shot from Hugo de Llanos. Despite the home side's home heroics, it was AZ Alkmaar who took the lead through Bouziane after he capitalised on a rebound from Álvaro in the box (29').

Visiting goalkeeper prevents the equaliser
From then on, Arbeloa’s boys kept looking for a way back, but they came up against a very inspired Zeggen in goal. In the 42nd minute, he saved a penalty taken by Hugo de Llanos after a handball by Esajas. Shortly afterwards, he again prevented the equaliser with two saves from the same play. First, he blocked a point-blank shot from Jacobo and then Víctor's shot after the rebound.

More chances
The second half followed much the same pattern as the first, with Madrid attacking the opposition's box. In the 61st minute, Aguado delivered a corner, Mario Rivas headed the ball goalwards and Hugo de Llanos’ effort went just wide. Nine minutes later, Aguado fired over the bar from a free-kick near the edge of the area. The academy team looked for the equaliser until the end and pushed forward. But AZ Alkmaar took advantage of the situation to kill the game off on the break with the deciding goal from Van der Klaauw (87').
