Madrid book place in Copa del Rey final

22 hour(s)

Real Madrid booked their place in the final of the Copa del Rey and on 26 April they will battle it out against Barcelona or Atlético at La Cartuja stadium (Seville) for the trophy. The match was decided in extra-time, following a nail-biting end to the game. Barrenetxea gave Real Sociedad the lead after 16 minutes and Endrick made it 1-1 in the 30th minute after an exquisite assist from Vini Jr. with the outside of his right foot. In the second half, two Alaba own goals made it 1-3 in the 80th minute, but from 82‘ to 86’ Madrid rampaged and Bellingham, after another precise assist from Vini Jr, and Tchouameni brought the score to 3-3. In the 93rd minute, Oyarzabal took the game into extra-time, where the Whites sealed their semi-final berth in the 115th minute when Rüdiger headed home Güler's corner.

Madrid were dominant early on at the Santiago Bernabéu and within ten minutes they had two clear chances to take the lead. The first was for Endrick after eight minutes with a bicycle kick inside the area that missed the target and seconds later Vini Jr. had a shot from the edge of the area that Remiro turned behind for a corner. After a quarter of an hour, the visitors levelled the tie with their first shot on goal through Barrenetxea.

Endrick’s neat finish
Real Sociedad's goal did not dampen Ancelotti's troops, who continued to attack in search of a goal. On 20 minutes, Bellingham's effort from inside the area went narrowly wide. Endrick struck ten minutes later. Vini Jr.'s spectacular pass with the outside of his right foot behind the defence found his compatriot who produced a delightful scooped finish to beat Remiro.

The two teams went into half-time at 1-1. After the break, the hosts almost took the lead when Rodrygo's corner almost crept in and was parried away by Remiro. Three minutes later, in his attempt to clear the ball, the visiting goalkeeper struck Bellingham's face inside the area, but Alberola Rojas did not award a penalty and was not alerted by the VAR official, Trujillo Suárez.

Moments of madness
The minutes elapsed and in the 70th minute, the visitors had a chance when Zubimendi got on the end of a corner and Lunin reacted with a great save to keep the ball out. Two minutes later, Ancelotti's men were unlucky as Real Sociedad levelled the tie once again. Marín crossed and Alaba put the ball into his own net as he attempted to clear. Things got worse in the 80th minute when Oyarzabal's shot deflected off Alaba again and past Lunin. The 1-3 scoreline was short lived as things then got frantic. In just two minutes, Vini Jr. broke away from Traoré on the wing, got to the byline and delivered another precise assist, his second of the night, to Bellingham, who volleyed home with a lovely finish.

The tie was level once again, but the Whites still wanted more and had the chance to level the game when Vini Jr. was one-on-one with Remiro, but the keeper was on hand to turn the ball behind for a corner. It was then that Tchouameni, who was excellent, won the aerial battle to score with a beautiful header. The score was 3-3, but that was not the end of the game. Following a free-kick, Oyarzabal made it 3-4 and took the tie into extra-time, although Bellingham could have prevented it in the 97th minute with a header that was brilliantly saved by Remiro.

Extra-time
Real Madrid dominated in extra-time and came close to scoring again in the 105th minute. A fine pass from Rodrygo found Mbappé, who controlled the ball with his chest, beat a defender to the ball and his shot in the six-yard box missed the target. In the second half, Olasagasti might have been sent off for a very fierce tackle on Vini Jr. with no possibility of contesting the ball. In the 115th minute, Rüdiger's header from an Arda Güler corner secured the team's place in the final for the fourth time this season.
