The Santiago Bernabéu hosted its first European Cup match 69 years ago. Real Madrid hosted Swiss side Servette and produced their first great performance in the competition in front of their home fans. The team coached by José Villalonga won 5-0 and brilliantly sealed their debut in the European Cup.
The first goal in the Bernabéu in the European Cup was scored by . La Saeta scored a brace in that match, in which Joseíto, Rial and Molowny also scored. A month earlier, on 8 September 1955, Real Madrid had made their European Cup debut in Geneva with a 2-0 win.
