Today marks the 38th anniversary of Fernando Martín’s debut in the NBA. On 31 October 1986, the centre became the first Spanish player to compete in a game in this competition. The Madridista legend debuted with the Portland Trail Blazers in the American league, and the Seattle SuperSonics were his first opponents in the 25 games he played in the American championship.
Before he departed for the NBA, Fernando Martín made history with Real Madrid for five seasons. In 1987, he returned to Madrid to continue his legendary career, which was cut short by his tragic death on 3 December 1989. His silverware list contains the following: League titles (4) Intercontinental Cup (1), Cup Winners' Cups (2), Korac Cup (1), Copa del Rey (3) and Spanish Super Cup (1).
