Defeat in Lille
2 month(s)
Real Madrid slipped to defeat away at Lille on matchday two of the Champions League group stage. Ancelotti’s men were dominant and started to push forward in attack in the opening exchanges. Bellingham retrieved the ball in the 6th minute and fed to Vini Jr, who cut inside and shot at the near post, but Chevalier made a fine save. The Whites came close again 13 minutes later. Endrick drove forward at pace and found himself one-on-one with the Lille keeper, but the shot-stopper stood tall to deny the Brazilian. The home side also had a chance to open the scoring, but Lunin produced a superb save to keep out Jonathan David's header and, after the rebound, produced a wonderful reflex save to keep the ball out and onto the post.
Just when it looked like it was going to be a goalless first half, Zhegrova's free-kick struck the arm of Camavinga, who was inside the area. The VAR intervened and the referee awarded a penalty for the hosts. Jonathan David made no mistake, putting his team ahead from the spot in stoppage time. The Whites almost equalised from a cross, but Endrick's shot, with the goalkeeper outside the six-yard box, sailed wide.
Chances
The minutes ticked by after the interval and the chances were still not materialising for Madrid. The equaliser could almost have come from a rehearsed move that ended with Carvajal's header, which narrowly missed the target. Madrid weren't done yet and they kept on plugging away until the end. A much clearer chance came in the 86th minute. Vini Jr crossed, Arda Güler headed the ball into the six-yard box and Rüdiger's header was cleared off the line by Tiago Santos.
In the following attack, Arda Güler crossed to the far post and Chevalier did well to keep out Rüdiger's header. In the 90th minute, Modrić played the ball over the top for Güler. The Turk's header in the six-yard box was brilliantly dealt with by the home keeper. Real Madrid suffered their first defeat after 36 games unbeaten (since 18 January 2024).
